Why the three belong together
Scanning without a naming and backup plan leaves you with a big pile of files. Organizing without careful handling of the originals leaves the physical photos at risk. Each guide covers one job and points to the others where they connect, so you can work through them in order or dip into the one that matches your problem today.
No guide can promise that a photograph will last. These aim to reduce risk, and they say so. Statements of fact in the guides come from public guidance by the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the National Park Service, CISA (the US cybersecurity agency) and the Image Permanence Institute, plus the help pages of tools named as examples. Each carries a small number that points to a Sources list at the back of the guide, with the date we checked it (October 16, 2026).
